Comparison
AEO, GEO and SEO
Answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation are the same thing under two names. The distinction that matters is not between those two — it is between both of them and search engine optimisation, and it is narrower than most vendors admit.
The short answer
SEO gets a page ranked. AEO and GEO get a company named. Traditional search returns a list of links and your job is to be high in it. An AI engine returns a short answer naming a handful of businesses, and your job is to be one of them. There is no second page to be on.
AEO and GEO are interchangeable. Generative engine optimisation is the term used in the academic work on the subject; answer engine optimisation is the term the industry adopted. They describe one practice. A vendor selling them as two services is selling the same thing twice.
Side by side
Where the two actually diverge.
| SEO | AEO / GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What it optimises for | A page ranking in a list of links | A company being named inside a generated answer |
| Where the work happens | Mostly on your own domain | Mostly off it — roundups, comparison pages, review platforms, community |
| What success looks like | Position on page one | Appearing in a list of roughly five names |
| How you measure it | Rank tracking, Search Console | Repeated prompting across engines, logged with the source each one cited |
| What breaks it | A core update | An engine changing which sources it trusts, with no announcement |
| Who publishes the rules | Google, partially, in documentation | Nobody |
| Age of the field | Roughly 25 years | Roughly 18 months |
What the research actually found
The most-cited study on this is a 2024 paper presented at KDD, which tested nine optimisation methods against a generative engine and measured the change in how often a source was cited. The findings that survived testing were unglamorous: citing sources and adding specific statistics produced the largest gains, and expert quotation followed. Keyword stuffing — the one tactic borrowed wholesale from early SEO — measurably reduced visibility.
That last result is the useful one. It means AEO is not SEO with new jargon. The techniques that worked on a ranking algorithm actively work against a model deciding whether a source is worth quoting.
Where most of the work happens
Brands are roughly six and a half times more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own domain. In restricted categories the gap is wider still, because engines lean harder on sources they read as independent when the subject is sensitive.
This is the part that makes AEO uncomfortable to sell. Most of the work is not on your website, which means most of it is not a deliverable you can look at. It is placement in roundups and comparison pages, presence on review platforms, participation in the communities an engine reads, and the dull entity work of making one company resolve to one node rather than four.
What nobody can honestly claim
No engine publishes how it selects sources. Everything stated about AEO by anyone, this page included, is observed correlation from repeated measurement of outputs. The field is about eighteen months old and the systems change without announcement.
So: no guaranteed placements, no confirmed ranking factors, and any provider quoting either is describing a relationship with an AI company that they do not have. What can honestly be offered is measurement that is reproducible, work aimed at the sources the measurement shows are being cited, and a report that says so when the number goes down.

Questions we get asked
Is AEO different from GEO?
Not meaningfully. Answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation describe the same work — getting a company named inside an AI-generated answer rather than ranked in a list of links. GEO is the term the academic research uses; AEO is the term most vendors use. Anyone selling them as two separate services is selling you the same thing twice.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No, and be sceptical of anyone who says so. The two share infrastructure — schema, crawlable content, entity consistency — and diverge in where the remaining work happens. A site with broken technical SEO will not be cited either. The honest framing is that AEO is a layer on top, not a replacement.
Is any of this a confirmed ranking factor?
No. No engine publishes how it selects sources. Everything anyone states about AEO, including everything on this site, is observed correlation from repeated measurement. The field is about eighteen months old. Treat confident claims accordingly, including ours.
Which engines does this cover?
ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. They resolve through different indexes — ChatGPT and Copilot lean on Bing, Gemini on Google, Perplexity unusually heavily on community discussion — so a programme optimising one surface will report healthy numbers while the others quietly fail.
Do I need this if my category is restricted?
More than most. If Google and Meta will not sell you reach, organic and AI visibility is not one channel among several — it is close to the whole acquisition surface. That is the entire reason this agency exists.
